Jörmungandr, the Cosmic Serpent: Between Chaos, Balance and Renewal
Share
✧ Introduction
In the dark depths of the northern oceans lies a titanic being, as fascinating as he is fearsome: Jörmungandr , the World-Serpent. Son of Loki and Angrboda, brother of Fenrir and Hel, he embodies the cosmic tension between order and chaos. As my hands carved him, a spiraling world, ancient and powerful, took shape—a sacred circle that contains as much as it threatens.
✧ The fate of Jörmungandr
Cosmos and Confrontation
Thrown into the seas by the gods, Jörmungandr grew there until he encircled Midgard, the world of humans, his tail in his mouth – forming the Ouroboros, an ancient symbol of the infinite cycle.
But he is not just a silent guardian. Legends foretell that he will emerge from the waves during Ragnarök for a final confrontation with Thor, the god of thunder. This cataclysmic duel will seal the fate of the world: Thor will kill the serpent, but will not survive. A double death, a mirror of both end and renewal.
✧ Jörmungandr, symbol of cycle and balance
Jörmungandr is more than a sea monster. He is the embodiment of the eternal circle , the link between life and death, the inescapable cycle of creation and destruction. He also symbolizes the fragile balance between opposing forces , and invites us to embrace change, necessary endings, and possible rebirths.
To record Jörmungandr is to capture a world in constant tension, a cosmic spiral where everything is connected.
✧ Why engrave Jörmungandr?
When I decided to engrave Jörmungandr, I wanted to represent the cyclical and powerful energy that he embodies. The serpent is shown coiled around itself , in a posture of eternal return. The stylized waves and runes surrounding it recall its marine and magical nature.
Each print is handmade using the ancient technique of linocutting. On the back, a bindrune of transformation and balance accompanies each copy.

✧ Jörmungandr in current pagan practice
Many practitioners of Ásatrú and Norse Paganism see Jörmungandr as a profound archetype : that of the chaos that precedes rebirth, of the force dormant beneath the surface.
It is often invoked:
- To accompany periods of transformation , rupture or change
- During rituals linked to the sea, to deep emotions , to the dissolution of old patterns
- As guardian of the threshold , symbol of passage between two states of being
On altars, spirals, shells, dark water stones, or representations of the serpent in a circle are often found. The runes Laguz, Jera, or Raido are often associated with its fluid, cyclical, and shifting energy.

✧ To go further
Jörmungandr is not just a titanic serpent. He is the echo of an order older than the gods , a guide for those who walk between ending and beginning. His presence is an invitation to accept the constant movement of the world, to dance with change rather than flee from it.
Each engraving is an offering to this sacred cycle, a gateway between the abyss and the light.
